Journalist Zakaria visits OU

International political analyst, Fareed Zakaria, visited the University of Oklahoma to speak about how America is loosing some of its power to other countries.

He brought up many strong points involving the economy and split political views. Many will agree that America has a dominate democratic political view, while the republican view is remaining regional and it is strongly affecting the ways in which issues are being seen. There isn’t enough balance in the decision-making processes that are currently occurring, and balance is greatly needed in this time of economic crisis in the United States.

The fact that Zakaria made these strong points while complementing Obama simultaneously is what our country needs. It is okay to disagree, but they fact that a successful man can complement another in a time of distress is a great example of the support that our country needs.

There is much negativity in the United States because of our troubles, and every now and again it is nice to hear something positive about the negative.

50 Most Powerful Blogs

I am not one to read blogs often. I'm sure that in a few years they will be as popular-to a wider range of people-as online newspapers have become. There is an article that was published on the 50 most powerful blogs around the world. It is an interesting article, because it summarizes each of the 50 blogs. I haven't ever heard of most of the blogs, except for two of my favorites, Perez Hilton and TMZ.

The most interesting thing about the article is to see the trends in blog topics. I noticed that many blogs are about politics, celebrities, thoughts on mainstream media, and hobbies. These are all topics that everyone can relate to. Everyone feels the impacts of politics and media, has heard gossip of celebrities wether they are writers, actors, singers, etc., and everyone has a hobby although some may not practice their hobby often. I think that's why the 50 most powerful blogs are as powerful as they are because they can connect to a vast range of people. I would have to say that buzz marketing is used to market blogs, but in a different style than the average buzz marketing. Blogs simply market themselves.

Below is the link to the article on the 50 most powerful blogs.

Favorite Blogs

I love anything that has to do with gossip, unless of course, I am part of it. How else is society supposed to know the latest celebrity gossip without television and magazines? Now, blogs are the latest trend on celebrity gossip! Below I have posted some of the blogs that I like to read on occasion. I am not a huge blog fanatic, but if I hear of something juicy, you bet I'll check it out!

Will OU take back their all-american's scholarship money?

The University of Oklahoma’s women’s basketball forward, Courtney Paris, and team did not make the cut for the NCAA Championship game. Paris promised the university that she would pay back her scholarship if they did not win the final game.

After being beat out of the Final Four against Louisville, Paris told all of Oklahoma that she will stay true to her word. The university came back and said they will not accept the return of the estimated $64,000 of scholarship money that was given to this talented player.

She is currently being drafted by the WNBA Sacramento Monarchs. Paris was the seventh pick in the draft and it’s estimated she will make around $41,000.

Still, Paris is determined to give back to her Oklahoma fans and the school. She is working with athletic director, Joe Castiglione, to work a plan to set up a fund to put the money towards. This fund will benefit Oklahoma’s needy people.

Response:
I believe that it takes a lot of guts for Courtney Paris to give her word that she will pay back her scholarship. I agree that the university shouldn't take it, but at the same time I think it's great that she is still willing to create a fund that goes somewhere that it is needed. Not many athletes give back to their community in such a way after they go on to make BIG money. I am proud of what Courtney Paris and the rest of the team has done for our community and proved to others.
